It's a wrap...
Fri, 06 Aug 2010 19:44:00 +1000

Yes, I have been very quiet on here lately, apart from my eBay sales which have been cleaning out my warehouse. Still plenty to go when I get the time to list them.

There is plenty happening however so here is a brief wrap up:

Need a pest inspection? Looking to buy a house?

If you are like me and house hunting for a new home, you probably will need a pest inspection. Check out NSW Pest Management for guaranteed service at a great price.

Fed up with managing your IT?
Those who haven't seen me lately may not be aware I am now working for www.iknowit.com.au, a IT managed services provider.
So what is a managed service provider? Exactly that, we manage your IT.
Whether it is a mobile phone, iPad, laptop, router, server, desktop, fax or printer, we can set it up and support it for you.

Keeping my head in the cloud
Lately I have made the next step from VMware on the desktop to ESXi the server solution and I love it.
In about 30 minutes I can provision a brand new HP Proliant server to be a vmware ESXi server running a flash (usb/sd) system disk with all hard disks dedicated to RAID 5 VM storage.
After that it is plug and play. How easy!!
I have even got to he stage where I can image the flash drives so that I can provision a server without any disk drives in minutes.
While the provisioning is easy it is the benefits that are amazing. I can consolidate multiple noisy and ageing servers into 1 box. That box can be easily secured so it cannot be accessed via the console or drives, only remotely to stop people playing. If a system crashes I can grab the last backup, convert it to a virtual disk and drop it back in. Plug and Play servers, at last. If the system drive crashes I can flash the USB key and replace or if the hardware fails, I can provision a replacement server in minutes using the same disks and flash drive.

So basically an idiot proof, minimal hardware, rapid deployment server solution with excellent disaster recovery capabilities.

iPaid?
I have had plenty of people ask me about iPad's recently and I have been involved with implementing them into Corporate environments, so to save you asking....

Can I use my iPad instead of a laptop?

Yes. If you buy the right apps and have the right IT solutions.

  • If you only need web access then it will be fine.
  • If you require the ability to save email attachments and documents and store, read, review or possibly edit these then you will need a 3rd party App for that. Try GoodReader or Dropbox as a starting point.
  • If you require custom business applications, then out of the box, No! The solution is to ensure you have a remote access environment (e.g. Terminal Server/Remote Desktop/VNC) where you can access your applications. Connect your VPN, remote to the desktop and voila, Windows on the iPad.

Anyway, that's myLine.
Would love to hear yours, you know how to find me.

Chris.
